You will lead on this work, working with your team and with schools to develop a SEND strategy that accurately reflects where we need to improve and practical steps to take things forward. It will require the ability to foster working relationships that allow for constructive professional challenge alongside the support that schools need to bring about change.
You’ll work closely with school leaders at all levels, to promote good practice, share expertise and set clear expectations. Working through your team you’ll ensure honest assessment, constructive challenge and collaborative improvement planning. You’ll also look across the system to ensure more cohesive working with other services such and ensuring that the SEND improvement work aligns to other key strategies such as Best Start and Families First. And you’ll look ahead, planning for upcoming sector reforms.
We’re looking for someone who has a proven track record in SEND provision and who can demonstrate positive impact on quality of education and outcomes. This work comes with high levels of attention and scrutiny. So, it’s essential that you understand the political dynamics of leading on such a high-profile area. You will need to be able to build positive relationships with school leaders and governors, building consensus around expectations and momentum behind the practical steps needed to bring about better outcomes for young people.
We expect that you will already have leadership experience within the sector - either in another local authority or in a multi academy trust. You should be well-informed on the current and emerging issues for the sector and have a detailed appreciation of the challenges that each school faces, individually and as part of the wider system.
